Sergei Eisenstein: ‘I am particularly interested in the musical landscape. - There is the shot dominated entirely by grey fog. - Then the shot with the clear, silvery surface of the water. - Then the black motif of the buoy, as a ponderous chord of the earthbound. - And then the black massifs of the ship's hulls fill the entire canvas. - Like an orchestra that unites wood and brass in the simultaneity and succession of action.’
